The presence of central Mexican styles was once thought to have been representative of direct migration or even conquest from central Mexico, but most contemporary interpretations view the presence of these non-Maya styles more as the result of cultural diffusion.

In the Mayan language Ik Kil means "The Place of The Winds", it is about 48 meters (157 ft) deep and is covered in green leaves and vines hang down from the top of the cenote.

It is known as "The capital of the Mayan East". Valladolid is located right in the middle of the two most important cities of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mérida and Cancún.
