What to see on the road to Stepantsminda (Kazbegi)- Kazbegi (since 2007 renamed Stepantsminda) is the first large settlement on the Georgian side of the Georgian Military Highway. The sights of Kazbegi include natural and architectural monuments that are worth seeing. Old Mount Kazbek is actually an extinct volcano that last erupted 2.5 thousand years ago. Located 70 km from Tbilisi, Zhinvali is striking in its beauty and in relief it is very similar to the Scandinavian fjords.

Stop At: Ananuri Fortified Castle Ensemble, Georgian Military Highway Near Zhinvali Reservoir, Ananuri 1803 Georgia

Fortress Ananuri - Ananuri fortress is located 70 kilometers from the capital. Back in 1723, King Teimuraz and the Kakhetians hid here from the attacks of the Avars, who unsuccessfully tried to besiege and seize the fortress. Ananuri (end of the 16th century), the main stronghold on the Georgian Military Highway, was very popular with travelers, as it is located at the confluence of the Aragvi and the Wajathevi River.

Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) - So often described in poetic and prosaic works of various writers, Kazbek is the second highest point in Georgia after the "Shkhara". It is unique and the fact that the territory of Stepantsminda is a temple called "Gergeti". It was built in the 14th century. The construction of the temple is worth special attention, because all materials were manually raised to a huge height.
