Stop At: Ke‘anae Point, Maui, HI
As a visitor to the area, you'll be awestruck by the majestic Ke'anae Peninsula. This impressive finger of newer lava stretches out from the Hana Highway's cliff line for half a mile. Even before reaching the turnout, you'll catch glimpses of this scenic wonder from various lookouts along the way. Ke'anae is a historically significant village that has been cultivating taro for centuries, and today, much of the land is still used for taro lo'i farming. It's remarkable to think that the soil was brought down here basket by basket, but it's true since the area is made up of young lava rock that was created quite recently (in geological terms) during a massive flow from Haleakala.

Stop At: Hana Lava Tubes, 205 Ulaino Road, Hana, Maui, HI
As you travel across Maui, you'll encounter some of the most incredible natural formations on earth, including the awe-inspiring lava tubes. These incredible tunnels are created when massive flows of lava cool on the surface, forming a conduit that insulates the lava flowing underneath. It's like the veins of the volcano, channeling lava for many miles underground before being deposited into the ocean, creating new landmasses. After a volcano has been dormant for some time, these tubes usually begin to cave in and disappear under the forces of nature. By wandering through the narrow passages of the tubes, you can witness the unique formations that have been created by the cooling lava. It's a thrilling and awe-inspiring experience that offers a glimpse into the fascinating geological history of Maui.
