Otago Peninsula's largest penguin colony. See up to 200 blue penguins returning from sea in the evening (Generally more penguins seen over our spring/summer months than our autumn/winter months).
During March-August (non-breeding period), we expect between 20-100 penguins seen each night over those months. On rare occasions during the non-breeding months we might see fewer than 15 birds.

We will offer viator refunds of 70% if we see less than 5 birds!

Extremely close viewing of these birds. Learn about the Māori history of this significant site. Tour includes a special "behind the scenes" look at the reserve and penguin habitat.

Description

Itinerary
This is a typical itinerary for this product

Pass By: Otago Peninsula, Dunedin New Zealand

We leave from the i-SITE in central Dunedin to drive the coastal road alongside the Otago Harbour to reach our first stop

Stop At: Taiaroa Head, Otago 9077, New Zealand

We arrive in good time before our Blue Penguins Pukekura Tour. Taiaroa Head is home to over 10000 seabirds (seasonal), here guests might see giant albatross flying over the headland, shags, gulls, seals or sea lions before the start of our penguin tour

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Blue Penguins Pukekura, 1245 Harington Point Road, Harington Point 9077, New Zealand

We visit one of New Zealand's largest penguin colonies. See up to 200 of the world's smallest penguins emerge from the sea and walk past us on our purpose-built viewing platform (while numbers of birds seen each night does vary throughout the year, we guarantee to see penguins).
The tour consists of learning about the fascinating Māori history at this site, a walk behind the scenes to see the penguin habitat and the regeneration work that the Pukekura Trust is undertaking.
As a Charitable Trust (all of our work to restore this coastal habitat for penguins and other wildlife is entirely funded by our guests coming to see the penguins).
Then we move onto our viewing platform to watch the world's smallest penguin walk past us as they scurry towards their homes within the reserve.

Duration: 2 hours

Pass By: Otago Peninsula, Dunedin New Zealand

After the Blue Penguin Experience tour finishes, we return guests back to the Dunedin centre or to their central Dunedin accommodation.
