Piazza Duomo takes its name from the Cathedral with which it marks the heart of the city, not only the geographic centre but also the artistic, cultural, historic, social and episcopal hub too. Originally started in the 14th century, the finished work you see today is thanks to the 19th-century architect Giuseppe Mengoni, who also designed the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Whether lined in winter with Christmas stalls full of wrapped-up shoppers or full of people watching an open-air concert in the summer sun, Piazza Duomo is always a place bustling with life.
